(His favorite phrase is "I'm gonna be King of the Pirates!" but you knew that already, right?) I translated it as "friends," but I think it has a much deeper meaning. In my dictionary, it can be translated as "group, company, party, set, circle, gang, companion, fellow, mate, colleage, associate, etc." To say "The tiger velongs to the cat family," you can use 'nakama' in Japanese. v.11 "pin to kitan da" Hmmcthis is a little hard to translate. It's not in my dictionary and the Japanese folk I talked to did not have any real good suggestions. I translated this phrase as "it flashed across my mind", sort of like 'hirameku.' Someone said it is kind of like "inspiration." I guess you can say "hit upon a good idea" as well. If this was an English song, this phrase might be "I decided on the spot," but I was trying to give you an idea of the flavor of the Japanese. v.13 "hoetainda" Literally this means "howl or bark." But I translated this as "shout out." I guess because to my sensibilities, "howl" here seems too much out of place in English. . . v. 16 "atama ni kuru ke do" I translated this as "It drives me crazy." But probably the Japanese is more interesting. The same phrase can also mean "Go to one's head," like "This liquor will go straight to your head." v.19 "nani te iwaretatte" v.21 "nani ga sugoi ka tte" I'm not real sure how to translate these. I guess the first would be something like "If you were to ask me what it is that I'm trying to say," but I translated it here as just "So what am I saying?" I tried to shorten it up. Maybe the second would be something like "Ask me what is cool, and I'll say ," but I translated it as just "Have got to say it was so cool." In Japanese Luffy is speaking really informally and in a real macho style, and I was trying to convey that . Oh well, at least I was trying to.
