when you first get control of vaan, he starts out with an almost blank board like this.
(other characters have their own starting grids, though none of them are all too full)
you can learn licence tiles that are already uncovered, as long as you have enough LP.
when you learn a licence, licence tiles that are directly next to it will become uncovered.
when balflear teaches vaan how to use gunbits, the "gunbit +1" tiles will appear.
when you win the avatar battles, the corresponding avatar tile will appear.
when a character learns an avatar, that tile will disappear from all other characters' boards.
when a character learns a mistnack, that tile will disappear from all other characers' boards.
when a character learns 3 mistnacks, all other mistnack tiles will disappear from that character's board.
in the end, the board will light up in a rainbow array.
